Reflexive verbs: se lever, se laver

When the action bounces back on you

Some verbs come with a little bounce-back word: se lever (to get up), se laver (to wash oneself), s'appeler (to be called). The se changes with the person: je me lève, tu te lèves, il se lève, nous nous levons, vous vous levez, ils se lèvent. Before a vowel, me / te / se become m' / t' / s'.

Many daily routine verbs are reflexive in French but not in English: se réveiller (wake up), s'habiller (get dressed), se coucher (go to bed), se souvenir (remember), s'amuser (have fun). In the past they all take être: je me suis levé(e).
