Making plurals

Usually an s, sometimes an x, sometimes nothing

Most nouns take an s in the plural, and you do not hear it: le chat, les chats. Words already ending in s, x or z stay exactly the same: le fils, les fils; le nez, les nez.

Words in -eau, -au and -eu take x: les bateaux, les jeux. Most words in -al switch to -aux: le cheval, les chevaux; le journal, les journaux. A handful of -ou words take x too: bijoux, cailloux, choux, genoux, hiboux, joujoux, poux. The article does the real work of telling you it is plural: le becomes les.
