Adverbs in -ment

Start from the feminine adjective

English adds -ly to make an adverb (slow, slowly). French adds -ment, but to the feminine form of the adjective: lent → lente → lentement. Heureux → heureuse → heureusement. If the masculine already ends in a vowel, skip the feminine: vrai → vraiment, poli → poliment.

Adjectives ending in -ant and -ent turn into -amment and -emment, both said 'amment': constant → constamment, évident → évidemment. And a few common ones are irregular: bon → bien, mauvais → mal, meilleur → mieux, gentil → gentiment.
