bon or bien? mauvais or mal?
Adjectives stick to nouns, adverbs stick to verbs
In English: Bon and mauvais are adjectives (they describe a noun and agree with it); bien and mal are adverbs (they describe how something is done and never change). Includes c'est bon versus c'est bien, and avoir mal.
Bon and mauvais are adjectives: they describe a noun and copy its gender and number. Un bon gâteau, une bonne idée, de mauvaises notes. Bien and mal are adverbs: they describe how an action is done, and they never change shape. Il chante bien, elle dort mal, ils travaillent bien.
So a good singer is un bon chanteur, but he sings well is il chante bien. Bad at maths is mauvais en maths, but he plays badly is il joue mal. If the word sits next to a noun, choose bon or mauvais. If it sits next to a verb, choose bien or mal.
Two famous pairs. C'est bon is for taste, comfort and 'that's right': c'est bon, ce gâteau ! C'est bien is approval, 'that's a good thing': c'est bien, tu as fini ! And j'ai mal means it hurts: j'ai mal à la tête. One exception: with smells, the adverb is bon: ça sent bon.
