The ending gives it away
Look at the last letters, not the meaning
Every French noun is either feminine (la) or masculine (le). It has nothing to do with girls and boys. A table is la table and a book is le livre. There is no reason. It is just how the word was born.
The good news: the end of the word is like a name tag. Most words ending in -tion, -té, -ette, -ure, -ence, -ance or -ie are feminine. Most words ending in -age, -ment, -eau, -isme, -oir or -al are masculine. Learn the tags and you will guess right most of the time.
