The plus-que-parfait: the past before the past
When one past thing happened before another
Sometimes you tell a story in the past and need to mention something that happened even earlier. English says 'had': when I arrived, he had already left. French does the same with the plus-que-parfait: the helper (avoir or être) goes into the imparfait, and the participle stays.
Quand je suis arrivé, il était déjà parti. J'avais fini mes devoirs avant le dîner. The rules for avoir versus être and for agreement are exactly the same as in the passé composé.
Examples
Il avait déjà mangé.He had already eaten.avoir in the imparfait + participle
Elle était partie avant moi.She had left before me.être in the imparfait + partie (agrees)
Nous avions oublié les clés.We had forgotten the keys.the earlier past
Je m'étais couché tôt.I had gone to bed early.reflexive: être
Two events? Order them
Draw the two events on a line. The earlier one gets the plus-que-parfait. Déjà (already) and avant (before) are big clues.
