Passé composé or imparfait?
The scenery versus what happened on stage
French has two ways to talk about the past, and English speakers mix them up because English only has one. The imparfait paints the scenery: what things were like, what used to happen, what was going on in the background. Il faisait beau. J'étais petit. Nous allions à la plage tous les étés.
The passé composé is the spotlight: an event that happened, started or finished at one moment. Soudain, le téléphone a sonné. Elle est tombée. J'ai fini mes devoirs. If you can put 'and then' in front of it, it is usually passé composé.
Examples
If the English can be said with 'was ...ing' or 'used to', use the imparfait. If it is a plain 'did' or 'and then', use the passé composé. Signal words: soudain, tout à coup, un jour → passé composé. Toujours, souvent, chaque jour, pendant que → imparfait.
