The conditional: would
Future stem, imparfait endings
The conditional says what would happen: je voudrais (I would like), il ferait (he would do). It is polite, it is hypothetical, and it is easy once you know the future: take the future stem (parler-, vendr-, ser-, aur-, ir-, fer-) and add the imparfait endings: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
The classic sentence is si + imparfait, conditional: Si j'avais le temps, je voyagerais. If I had time, I would travel. Never put a conditional after si; si takes the imparfait.
Examples
Hear the r, then the -ais sound: je parlerais, j'aurais, j'irais. Future has r + é sound (parlerai), conditional has r + è sound (parlerais).
