Saying no: the ne ... pas sandwich

The verb is the filling

To say no, French wraps the verb in a sandwich: ne in front, pas behind. Je mange → Je ne mange pas. In front of a vowel, ne becomes n': Je n'aime pas.

Swap pas for other words to change the meaning: ne ... jamais (never), ne ... rien (nothing), ne ... personne (nobody), ne ... plus (no longer), ne ... que (only). In the passé composé, the sandwich wraps only the helper: Je n'ai pas mangé.
