a / à, ou / où, et / est
One sound, two spellings, one swap test
These pairs sound identical, so your ear cannot help you. Your eyes and a swap test can. If you can replace the word with 'avait' (had), it is a, the verb. Otherwise it is à, the little word meaning to, at or in.
Same idea for the others. If 'ou bien' (or else) fits, write ou. If it means where, write où. If 'était' (was) fits, write est. If 'et puis' (and then) fits, write et.
Examples
Il a un chat.He has a cat.Il avait un chat ✓ → a
Il va à Paris.He goes to Paris.Il va avait Paris ✗ → à
Thé ou café ?Tea or coffee?ou bien ✓ → ou
Où es-tu ?Where are you?means 'where' → où
The swap
Read the sentence with the swap word out loud. If it still makes sense, use the plain spelling. If it sounds silly, use the accent.
