Bread, arms and flesh: not what they look like
Round two, with the everyday words. Le pain is bread, not pain. Le bras is your arm, not a bra. La chair is flesh, not a chair (that is une chaise). Une location is a rental, not a place.
Notice the pattern: the French word is often the older, original meaning, and English drifted away. Knowing that makes them easier to forgive, and easier to remember.
Examples
le painbread'pain' is la douleur
la déceptiondisappointment'deception' is la tromperie
prétendreto claim'to pretend' is faire semblant
une injurean insult'an injury' is une blessure
Story trick
Link the real meaning to a picture: le pain is a baguette so warm it 'pains' you to wait for it.
